Getting ready to embark on a massive festival season, alternative pop breakout artist Alessi Rose delves deep into her emotions with new single ‘Skin‘.
Co-written by Adam Yaron (Alex Warren), the slow, melancholic single quickly builds up, entering the chorus, where fireworks are exploding, with the passionate and energetic drums and the electric guitars combined with the high-pitched, angelic vocals of Alessi, sounding like an emotionally driven ballad you would hear from Sabrina Carpenter or Gracie Abrams.
With the extraordinary vocals and music production elevating the passion and frustration inside the song, it highlights the importance and emphasises the themes of trying to be what everyone wants, but then, when it comes to recognising yourself, you are becoming someone you don’t know. Alessi uses honesty and real-life experiences to convey how you can’t always please everyone, and you should always be yourself, no matter what anyone else says. While the lyrics are identified on growth and self-acceptance, Alessi has a talent for crafting a song that can contain various perspectives and not just be limited to one topic, as ‘Skin‘ could also relate to a toxic relationship which turned you into somebody you didn’t want to be, how relationships can turn you into somebody you don’t like or are not familiar with. It is an emotionally driven song that anyone can resonate with, whether you are leaving a relationship or trying to stop people-pleasing in life. It is beautiful to see how the spectacular songwriting from Alessi can inspire and create an emotional journey for any listener invested in her music.
“This song was written in a period that felt very different for me I have been lucky enough to be locked away in the studio burrowing into the many feelings I have simmering under the surface, many of them remnants of a crazy last year, and I hadn’t realized how much of my OCD-ridden brain was so dependent on the validation of others — people telling me I was doing good and it was all going to be okay. ‘Skin’ was the realisation that the more you try to be everything that everyone else wants, the less you feel like yourself. Sometimes my skin feels uncomfortable, but I’m learning to exist in it honestly anyway.”
