Indie-rock rising star Meg Elsier returns with her new single ‘Meaning Of Life‘, where she is defining the unique yet charismatic sound that makes her stand out from the various artists in the independent music industry.
With a slow, laid-back acoustic melody starting on the emotional and relatable track, Meg sings about the troubles of life people can go through, wondering what the meaning of this life we are living is, when we are stuck in a constant cycle of feeling depressed, anxious and worthless. Yes, it may be dreary, but this singer-songwriter knows how to write worthy tracks which have an important meaning behind them, not shading everything in bright colours, but by singing about the dark storms we all face in life.
While the song starts slow, the music quickly changes, adding a rock element, with Meg going full-out on the energetic, pounding drums and electric guitars. Listening to the new song’s release, the music production shifts from soothing acoustics when Meg has something more sentimental to say, then vitalises the words by adding a passionate, rock-heavy sound behind it.
Crafting her unique sound that stands out from the rest of the music crowd, Meg also sings with delicate vocals in front of the hazy musical production, which makes the song moving to hear. Singing about relatable mental health themes, she describes in the song how: “Talked to a friend/And they’ve been through a lot/They’ve been crying all day/And they haven’t been good/BUT They say they can feel/And that’s realer than most/Yeah its realer than this/And its realer than outside.”
“’ meaning of life” is about giving depression company,” meg shares. “It’s being fucking tired, stuck in self-sabotage and procrastination, feeling nothing and living vicariously through other people instead. It’s a pretty goddamn selfish song.”
She continues, “It’s also about ruining normal, sweet moments with nihilistic thoughts, like what happens when I die while I’m trying to find that a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. There’s no reason to it. And if there’s no reason to it, then maybe there’s no reason to me. It’s about the freedom and relief in realizing that maybe it’s not about everything being meaningless, but about how hard it is to find meaning when there’s no reason to it.”
The release follows a whirlwind year for Meg Elsier. She unveiled the expanded edition of her debut album, Spittake (deluxe), signed with Bright Antenna Records, toured across the US alongside Blondshell and Liz Cooper, moved from Nashville to New York, and made her SXSW debut, where she performed at nine different showcases. Most recently, she appeared at Boise, Idaho’s Treefort Music Fest, further cementing her status as an artist on the rise.
