Reverend and the makers release new Christmas single 'Late Night Phone Call'

Rock band Reverend and the Makers deliver a powerful message on loneliness in Christmas single ‘Late Night Phone Call’

Recently, the rock band Reverend and The Makers have joined with mental health charity Samaritans, to create a powerful Christmas single called ‘Late Night Phone Call‘.

While the indie rock band is known for its rock style, this new single is more relaxed, with a smooth acoustic sound and upbeat rhythm on the drums, creating that Christmassy feel that brings out a joyful atmosphere.

Though this new single of the bands has a cheerful rhythm to people’s ears, the main message conveyed in ‘Late Night Phone Call‘ is about when you are on a late night drink and have the urge to call up someone, explaining how much you really love them and want to connect with them. This can relate to anyone this time of year, when you want to express true feelings to someone, as most people during the December season can feel lonely and want to have that special connection with someone, and frontman Jon McClure sings this so powerfully with his pleasant country twang. ‘I don’t wanna mess around/Never gonna let you down/I just wanna tell you/I love you, love you, love you, I’m/Sorry that I woke you up‘.

On the new single, frontman Jon Mcclure explains how the new single is “a weird one in that it isn’t a Christmas song and doesn’t really have a chorus, yet it totally felt like a Christmas pop song from the very beginning. It’s also based loosely on a true story where I went out and had a gallon of Guinness and rang Laura up on the way home drunkenly telling her that I love her. As you can see in the video, she wasn’t initially too impressed given the hour but obviously I won her round with a bit of the old Northern charm and apple crumble. My mum and friends all cried when they heard the song. My dad was a big fan of it before he passed away so there’s a lot of emotion wrapped up in it too as it’s our first Xmas without him.”

Having the single promote a heartwarming message, the band wanted to bring attention to how Christmas time is sometimes lonely and people can feel isolated, so teaming with Samaritans is meaningful to the band. Jon McClure opens up more and states how “I wanted to get Samaritans involved as people being alone and in a bad place at Christmas time is something that has always really bothered me. Every year on Christmas day I Zoom a bunch of people who are alone and struggling and play them a song to cheer them up a little. I kinda thought we could go one step further with that this year and direct them towards a charity that is there to help with this. Times are tough for a lot of people and it’s not hard as an artist to help people in this way.”

The Sheffield rock indie band have brought a special song to December and it combines the sadness and happiness inside Christmas and how people can truly feel during this emotional time.
