Canadian-born, London-based singer-songwriter Cate releases new heartbreak single, ‘One Hit Wonder‘, where she takes us back in a time machine to the good old noughties style of hits.
With her new single out, dreaming about the one who gets away in a relationship, the smooth melody of the intro from this particular song reminds us of Sixpence None The Richer song ‘Kiss Me‘. It seems like, already, singer Cate wants to deliver a reminiscing atmosphere of the early noughties track, taking us back to the romantic relationship song that is still popular today.
Having a distinct reminiscent melody that most listeners have missed hearing is a captivating musical choice for Cate to make within her new single, and along with her passionately singing on the reflection of a relationship, describing that certain someone who escaped out of her life, it brings an emotional narrative to the bittersweet song.
Singing about losing her ‘One Hit Wonder’ and how they “built me up, then let me go/Now he’s just somebody that I used to know.”, the singer explores themes of loss and hurt while still exquisitely singing over an uplifting, acoustic pop song that makes you want to smile, but at the same time feel sympathy for the character inside the track.
“I wrote One Hit Wonder with my friends last summer after making a joke that a man that I was dating was one. Then the joke went a bit too far when we wrote a whole song out of a whole bunch of one-hit wonders. It’s about someone who only really gives you one good summer of fun, but never anything else. And as much as you want to get the song out of your head – you just can’t.”

Following up on her single release, rising star Cate has continued to prove she is a star in the making by supporting Maisie Peters on tour, including performing at Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival. As well as this, Cate has stayed strong within her style of confessional and infectious pop, giving the audience a chance to sing with her while she pours out her deep emotions inside the lyrics of her dreamy songs.
After the release of her brand new single and touring with Maisie Peters, she has gained over 10 million overall listeners on Spotify since her debut single in 2019. Now Cate is ready to join the support slot on Australian singer-songwriter Gretta Ray, kicking off this month across Australia and a UK headline tour all happening this year.
