Mae Krell - Imposter Syndrome EP

Singer-songwriter Mae Krell goes on a journey of love in her new EP ‘Imposter Syndrome’

Recently, New York-singer-songwriter Mae Krell released her new EP, ‘Imposter Syndrome‘, delivering honesty about her personal experiences.

Containing four musically soft tracks is the ‘Imposter Syndrome‘ EP, which describes love and relationships and losing yourself in the process of it all. While the lyrics are vulnerable in the EP, so is the music because of the gentle rhythm that flows along each track.

The ‘Imposter Syndrome’ EP includes:

  1. colorblind
  2. rest stop
  3. phantom limb
  4. imposter syndrome

In most of today’s music, a successful element of a song is the atmosphere created inside it, whether it is energetic or soulful, there needs to be a meaning behind it, and this is what Mae Krell does.

On her EP, she mentions that “I’ve grown up, begun to gain confidence as an artist, and had the opportunity to have my voice really listened to in every step of the music making process. With all of this positive change still comes doubt; and often really intense imposter syndrome, at least for me. This record is about pushing through it because you know it’ll all be worth it.”

Although each song communicates the same relationship inside it, the artist gives each track a different approach and story. For example, in the beginning, ‘colorblind‘ describes how everything has changed since the two people have been apart, and since the two have broken up, the singer seems to have no spark in her life; nothing brightens her up anymore. Whereas, in tracks such as ‘Phantom Limb‘, Mae pours her heart and emotions out into the song where she talks about the love which is bringing a lot of painful memories to her life, and is resulting in her avoiding thinking about it, otherwise it will be like a limb torn off. ‘Phantom Limb‘ is one of the tracks on the EP which delves deep into the damage a relationship can cause; the lyrics are heart-wrenching the way Mae creates them.

Like ‘Phantom Limb‘ where Mae opens up with her personal experience, ‘Imposter Syndrome‘ does the same thing, but this time, it is a song that anyone can relate to, especially amongst young adults. The heavy-mellow song is one in which Mae lets the audience discover more about herself, where it explains how she pretends to be something she is not, self-doubting her success which is a thing that many people do in life. Mae Krell brings to life how we all feel.

Speaking about the song, she says;

While sitting in the studio I had this overwhelming feeling of not being talented enough and feeling like I shouldn’t be there. Imposter syndrome is such a common feeling, especially for people from minority backgrounds, and it really hit me like a truck that day. That was then followed by going home and writing this song.”

Since being on the music scene since she was 22-years-old, Mae has grown into a powerfully, unique artist who speaks with wisdom. Influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan and Phoebe Bridgers, Mae has a distinctive style of folk-pop which is beautiful.
