On the 27th of August, singer-songwriter Maisie Peters released her debut album called ‘You Have Signed Up To This‘.
Her new album is filled with synth-pop, dreamy music, containing fourteen tracks which each describe stories about messy, unhealthy relationships, a bit like Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Sour‘ album, but an album taken from a new, unique perspective in Maisie’s eyes.
Like many great songs from Maisie’s collection, the tracks on her album have a way of giving an honest approach. She has a talent for portraying relatable stories and experiences within her songwriting. Like her intro song of the album, ‘You Signed Up For This‘, is intriguing because Maisie sings directly to us; you brought her album, so you will now hear her life story about love, significant others and chaos. However, it’s not her fault because ‘you signed up for this’.
Throughout her album, Maisie continues to sing with a narrative side, explaining experiences that can be relatable to others. Songs such as ‘Outdoor Pool‘ and ‘Love Him I Don’t‘ give accounts about messy love and chaotic relationships.
Though most of the album are anecdotes about the anger about exes, Maisie still adds danceable music that creates high energy of beats. Like ‘Boy‘ and ‘Psycho‘, the music sounds light and carefree, but this differentiates with the lyrics, as Maisie sings with annoyance over an ex treating her bad.
While telling a mixture of stories, Maisie brings humour and vibrance within her lyrics and music. She sings with fury about an ex, but while doing this, she gives entertaining stories, such as her song ‘I’m trying (not friends)’, “One for being lost and alone in your early twenties / One for being obsessed with someone who puts you secondary / One for calling guys with guitars in a cemetery / Just me? / Ok If I’m being frank, I want a “sorry” but I’ll settle for a handshake.”
Altogether Maisie Peters debut album gives a funny, truthful, narrative approach about heartbreaks and relationships, making it passionate and lively to listen to.
