Album Review: Nick Jonas shares his true feelings about his relationship and life in lockdown on ‘Spaceman’

On 12th March, one of the many pop sensations from the Jonas Brothers, Nick Jonas, brought out his fourth studio album, Spaceman

Since March 2020 in lockdown, many artists have been showing their creativity in making music and lyrics based on their experiences on lockdown, relationships and life in general. Musicians such as Ariana Grande, Little Mix, Justin Bieber have been releasing their ‘Quarantine Albums’. Next on the list is Nick Jonas telling us how life is, and while doing this, bringing an edge to his music.

From the title, ‘Spaceman‘, the eleven-track album feels like space within itself; powerful, different and mesmerizing. It evokes the honesty of the relationship he has with his wife, Priyanka Chopra. Inside the album, Nick communicates the devotion he has towards her.

Bringing his emotions to life in music, Nick, with his smooth vocals, talks about being love-struck and unable to be without his significant other. ‘Heights‘, ‘Delicious‘ and ‘Sexual‘ explore the theme of love and commitment, how he prepares to be there and never give up on his wife.

While listening to the songs about arousing love, the electronic, synth-pop sound didn’t, at first, personally work well, as it felt distant and didn’t connect like usual pop, R&B sounds we hear today. However, after repeating the album, it is clear that having a synth-pop musical sound with lyrics about indulgence are compatible; it adds groove to the album.

This electronic, synth music runs right through ‘Spaceman‘, giving us a retro feel, where we would hear this style of music from the 80s. Helping to produce this iconic sound was Greg Kurstin, who has worked with Foo Fighters, Adele, Paul McCartney, and many more. The music here and his last album in 2016, ‘Last year Was Complicated‘, demonstrates how Nick continues to channel his signature pop sound but now experiments further by incorporating a unique pop style which is refreshing to hear.

So excited to be starting this journey with all of you. I made this album while doing what most of us have been doing during this past year, sitting at home getting used to the new normal and hoping for better days ahead. There are four central themes we will explore on this album… Distance. Indulgence. Euphoria. Commitment.”

Sharing the story about his relationship, Nick also tells his relatable experience about the lockdown. Tracks like ‘Spaceman‘ and ‘2Drunk‘ reveal his current life. ‘Mask off minute I get home / All safe now that I’m alone.’ In ‘2Drunk‘, he also explains his choices in life right now, ‘Now I’m dancing in the kitchen, breaking all the dishes / Breaking all the rules that I set myself / I swore I wouldn’t lose my mind again.’

Altogether, this album is successful through Nick’s power to exhibit the honest approach he brings to the album and how it radiates a relaxed but rhythmic feel to it. It is an album filled with swagger and a connection that everyone can feel.

Why not listen to the album ‘Spaceman‘ now?
