Album Review: Passenger Uplifts The ‘Drunk And Broken Hearted’

Last week Michael David Rosenberg, known as Passenger, released his album ‘Songs For The Drunk And Broken Hearted‘.

Looking at the title and the artwork of the album, ‘Songs For The Drunk And Broken Hearted‘, thinking it was going to be an album which would create a feeling of despair, instead, the album was one filled with optimism and uplifting songs. This was surprising because when seeing the words ‘Drunk’ and ‘Broken Hearted’, you would interpret it as an album which would have songs that creates a depressing mood, but it is not in Passenger’s case.

Originally the album was going to be released in May 2020, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the singer decided to reschedule it for the 8th of January, as he felt this was the right time instead.

Inside the ten track list album is a soothing guitar sound and a drum beat, and both of these combined, throughout the songs, creates a beautiful musical rhythm, which you would find yourself listening to this type of sound on a Sunday while relaxing.

In the intro of the album, Passenger questions someone about life, and trying to find the answer to why they’re feeling like the way they do. It is a song which has a deep thought behind it, ‘Sword From The Stone‘ expresses the meaning of how you cannot pull the pain from the heart, in this case, you ‘can’t pull a sword from the stone‘. Passenger softly sings about how you cannot escape the pain, because after a heartbreaking event, you will experience hurt because it is part of life.

Songs which relate to how difficult going through pain are ‘Tip Of My Tongue’, ‘Sandstorm‘ and ‘Nothing Aches Like A Broken Heart‘. These tracks within the album is Passenger describing how you cannot avoid pain, he describes how it feels like. For example, in ‘Tip Of My Tongue‘ he beautifully sings about how ‘It’s something I can’t change/ For you can’t stop a sailing sun/ And I wanna scream it at the top of my lungs/, But it’s something I can’t say/ Though it’s on the tip of my tongue/ It’s on the tip of my tongue‘.

With pain and hurt that people experience, it eventually becomes easier, and this is when it progresses for you to overcome it. Within overcoming challenges, Passenger includes songs for the broken-hearted and the drunk which tries to motivate them to start over and get back up again, even if it difficult they will get through it.

The singer tries to convey this message through songs such as ‘Remember To Forget‘, ‘What You Waiting For?‘ and ‘London In The Spring‘. Trying to give advice and feelings of hope inside ‘The Way That I Love You‘, Passenger tells the audience how ‘You’re lovely just the way you are/ Don’t let the world come and change you/ Don’t let life break your heart‘.

Passenger recently released a trilogy of songs and accompanying videos introducing his audience to different characters in his drunk and the broken-hearted universe. You can find the trilogy of songs here where passenger explains his album and the characters inside of it.

Songs For The Drunk And Broken Hearted‘ is a passionate and meaningful album, and this is no surprise, as Passenger has always been a gifted singer to express true lyrics from the heart.

Passenger also has an upcoming music tour scheduled from the 26th August 2021, go check out information on his music tour here.
