Cruz Share Heartfelt Breakup Anthem ‘I Get By’

Sheffield indie rock quartet Cruz are quickly becoming one of the city’s most exciting rising bands, bringing energetic guitar-driven anthems and relatable storytelling to their growing catalogue of releases. Their latest single, I Get By, continues that momentum with a heartfelt look at navigating life after heartbreak.

Following their previous release, More Of The Same, Cruz return with another infectious indie rock track packed with driving rhythms, soaring guitars and a chorus designed for festival crowds. The band’s signature blend of raw emotion and upbeat production once again takes centre stage.

On I Get By, vocalist and guitarist Sam Thatcher reflects on the difficult process of moving on after a relationship ends. While the pain of a breakup still lingers, the track carries an underlying sense of optimism, balancing sadness with the determination to keep pushing forward.

Combining honest lyricism with infectious melodies, Cruz captures the emotional aftermath of love and loss without losing the uplifting energy that makes their music so engaging. It’s a bittersweet anthem that many listeners will find themselves relating to.

Speaking about the track, Sam said: “I Get By is about the personal experience of coming out of a relationship, but your feelings for that person still remain the same. You’re finding it hard to accept or believe that things are over, but you’re learning how to deal with those feelings.”

Cruz’s journey began in Sheffield in 2020 when Thatcher met lead guitarist Tom Cox at university. Joined by drummer Ethan Mockford and bassist Jamie Scholes, the band bonded over a shared love of artists including The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines and The Last Shadow Puppets.

Their early promise was showcased on their 2023 debut EP If Not Now, When?, while a string of releases throughout 2025 helped grow their reputation on the live circuit. Festival appearances at Isle of Wight, Truck, Tramlines and Rock N Roll Circus, alongside support slots with acts including The View, The Clause, overpass and The Lilacs, have continued to expand their audience.

With shows alongside The Bracknall coming up and an appearance at Sweden’s Viva Sounds Festival on the horizon, Cruz are showing no signs of slowing down. The band’s biggest headline show to date will take place at Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on 8 May 2027, marking another major milestone in their rise through the UK’s indie scene.
