Since becoming a popular and successful pop band in the 90s, Toploader returns to music with their new single ‘Sleepyhead‘ almost a decade later.
From their last single release, ‘Roll With The Punches‘ in 2017, the Toploader trio Dan Hipgrave, Rob Green, and Joseph Washbourn return to a new era of music, turning a page and creating a sensational new release: an uplifting, soulful single, ‘Sleepyhead’.
Continuing with their upbeat and groovy signature sound of 70s soul and pop, they blend it with their rich harmonies, grounding the song. ‘Sleepyhead‘ is one of those vibrant songs that you will have on a repeated loop inside your head due to the catchy rhythms and playful messages about wanting to just relax in bed and sleep, which is a very relatable experience for anyone who doesn’t do mornings!
Vocalist and keyboardist Joseph Washbourn says, “‘Sleepyhead’ explores our seemingly inherent human inability to wake up and smell the coffee. Even when the odds are so obviously stacked we’d rather bury our heads in the pillow, turn off the alarm clock and go back to bed! The song was written around a riff created on a vintage Yamaha CP80 piano, used heavily on classic recordings by Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel and Genesis.”
‘Sleepyhead’ was written by Joseph and was produced by Danton Supple (Coldplay), his latest collaboration with the band after previously working on their 2011 album ‘Only Human’.
Beginning as a five-piece in 1997 with members Joseph Washbourn, Dan Hipgrave, Julian Deane, Matt Knight and Rob Green, the pop band became viral with their cover hit of ‘Dancing In The Moonlight‘ earning a triple-Platinum debut album ‘Onka’s Big Moka’, four BRIT Award nominations, and their success continues today, with 1.5 billion streams to date, almost 8 million monthly listeners at Spotify, and they remain renowned for their live sets. This has included sharing the stage with countless big names, including Coldplay, Muse, Robbie Williams, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Bon Jovi, Simple Minds and Counting Crows, plus playing festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading – and most recently as guests to James Blunt on his arena tour.
After being on hiatus during the period of 2003-2009, Toploader continued as a three-piece band, journeying on to carry the success of Toploader. Still creating music and performing at festivals, sharing the love their fans have for their incredible hits, in 2023 Toploader proved to be the busiest summer festival season of their entire career – and now Toploader bring that big stage experience to their current intimate UK headline tour, which commenced last week. The remaining dates are below, and limited tickets are available HERE.
Why not listen to their new single ‘Sleepyhead‘ now to get you out of bed!
