With a charming voice and soulful music, it is easy to sink yourself into rising star Mega’s new single, ‘Don’t Get Too Close‘. With a sound that is inspired by the likes of Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Amy Winehouse, what is not to like about Mega and her music?
Surpassing 55 million streams on Spotify with her two previous EPs ‘Future Me’ and ‘Colour Your World’, the contemporary, soulful singer anticipated her fans with a new single for 2023, with more yet to come.
With the introduction of this song creating a mixture of grooves and upbeat melodies, the beginning felt influenced by the starting musical sequence from Bob Marley’s popular hit, ‘Could You Be Loved?’, this relaxed intro transported the song into an uplifting atmosphere.
While it leaves audiences with a joyful mood reflecting on the empowerment of being strong and not getting too close, it also reveals a vulnerable side to Mega, describing how she could have barriers up to protect herself from getting hurt. Singing about these themes inside her song: “Slow it down, don’t get too close/We’ve been down that road before/Gave you love and you left me low/Need me now that I let go/I don’t need your hand to hold.”
Mega says, “At one point in our lives, sometimes more than often, we find ourselves in relationships which lead to thought patterns that can be deemed as quite toxic or unhealthy and this song is about protecting your energy. Protecting your energy is crucial to your mental and physical health as it is the ultimate determinant of our peace and happiness. We give a lot of ourselves away every day and often it can be difficult to remove ourselves from negative distractions or situations in our lives. ‘Don’t Get Too Close’ is an empowerment anthem, and an encouragement to continue on that journey of honouring and protecting your space and personal growth.”
Mega wrote ‘Don’t Get Too Close’ with the track’s producer Jonny Hockings, with additional production from Jojo Mukeza(Stormzy) and mixing courtesy of Nathan Boddy (PinkPantheress, Celeste, Mura Masa).
