Single Review: Tim Minchin ‘Airport Piano’

On September 25th, singer, Tim Minchin, released his new single called ‘Airport Piano’, ahead of his upcoming debut album, ‘Apart Together’, which will release on November 20th.

To accompany the new single, Minchin has released the official visual for ‘Airport Piano’. Whilst in lockdown, Tim put a call out on Twitter to find an old piano that he could sand down and write the lyrics of the latest track on. In his latest creative offering filmed in his garage, he does just that with a brand-new piano gifted by Yamaha. He plans to auction the piano to raise money for a chosen Australian charity.

In ‘Airport Piano’, Tim narrates a story about his journey through the airport, and he describes different types of people in the airport and how he is longing to return home to his family.

I wrote this song on an airport piano

I was the guy disturbing your journey from security

To gate twenty-three A

Maybe you noticed me

I wrote this song cos I had a spare hour

I was delayed trying to get back to my babies in Sydney

And I noticed the keys so I’m writing a song

Singin’

‘Airport Piano’ By Tim Minchin

So far Tim has revealed four tracks from his upcoming debut album such as Leaving LA, Apart Together, I’ll Take Lonely Tonight and now the fourth track which is the descriptive and upbeat song ‘Airport Piano’.

Tim Minchin sings spectacular in ‘Leaving LA’
Tim Minchin sings beautifully on his single ‘Apart Together’
Tim Minchin delightfully sings his single ‘I’ll Take Lonely Tonight’

Unlike his three disclosed tracks, ‘Airport Piano’ is more cheery and joyful, as it flows through with an uptempo and lively tune.

What we like about Tim Minchin is throughout his music, he continues to share a heartwarming story, and this is unique in today’s music, as we don’t recognise the style of storytelling lyrics.

Tim Minchin is a veritable creative genius; his enjoyed continued worldwide success as a musical theatre composer-lyricist, countless sold-out concerts, as well as being one of the most successful Australian comedians of his generation.

Why don’t you listen to Airport Piano now?

  1. Thanks for the review and (especially!) linking in the videos Tim Minchin released for his new Apart ToGetHer studio album. I’ve found that if I can get a friend to listen to just one or two….they’re HOOKED! That’s all it takes. Eight minutes of your life and you’re forever changed! To be fair, we’re talking Tim Minchin, so a couple songs is more like eleven minutes. There’s a reason Tim doesn’t get air play. You can fudge profane lyrics, but run time of that length hasn’t been done successfully with those few exceptions we all know (MacArthur’s Park, Bohemian Rhapsody, American Pie). Bottom line,Mr. Minchin is the premiere artist and creative genius of our time. Does anybody read that as hyperbole? If they do, they need to take a fresh listen to his work. Thanks for writing about him.
