The Molotovs release their debut album 'Wasted On Youth'

Empowering Youth Through Music: The Molotovs’ Debut Album

Rocking up in the midst of 2020, The Molotovs made their incredible mark in the music industry, not afraid of setbacks or the life of ‘struggling musicians’ trying to make their way in the music world, the sibling duo have fought their way through the crowd of talented artists, and made their music come alive, releasing their debut album ‘Wasted on Youth‘.

The Molotovs are comprised of siblings Matthew, 17 (vocals/guitar), Issey, 19 (bass), and their drummer, Noah Riley. The band have worked every bone in their body to rise to the top in the indie music world. Influenced by new wave punk, rock, and indie, The Molotovs bring an original edge to their music collection, speaking on social and political issues, conveying the message that anyone who is fired with creativity and talent should not be afraid of putting their own stamp on society – we all have a voice, so why not speak up throughout our artistic work?

From gigging in small venues, pubs, and even libraries, the band have brought their determination and strength to create a reconigtion for their music, and it is not difficult to be captivated by such a successful independent band like The Molotovs as they have their unique personality which radiates power, rebillion and not caring about anyone, just doing what they love the most, which is making impactful music which resonates with a variety of audiences.

Rising in the industry and becoming one of the most influential groups in London, they have toured with the likes of Blondie, Sex Pistols, Green Day, and many more. They have also recently showcased their music from their debut album on The Johnathan Ross Show, which you can check out here:

Wasted On Youth‘ does exactly this – they inspire and create hope amongst young people. Living in a world where you have to take every opportunity in front of you to get your name in the world, while trying to keep that positive momentum going in a place that feels like you are getting rejected or pushed aside everywhere you go, in their eleven tracks, The Molotovs speak passionately about this theme with a fierce energy driven through the explosive drums and lively guitars, creating a carefree yet electricfying atmosphere.

Inside tracks such as ‘Get A Life‘ and ‘Daydreaming‘, Matthew and Issey teach us not to let anything get in our way, ordering us to keep going and continue to work toward our goals, making sure no time is wasted. “So stop daydreaming/And floating through life/You don’t want to have it pass you/And I tell you it bites/So stop daydreaming/And go get a job.”

Keeping the tempo and energetic music driving through our veins, tracks such as ‘More More More‘ and ‘Rhythm of Yourself‘, reiterate the message of carrying on being yourself and not having the fear of being judged in this world filled with stereotypes.

While the music is empowering alone by itself, the lyrics crafted by Matthew are raw and honest, the narratives created in each song are defined by truth where he puts his own spin on things, speaking on topics and feelings that the young generation can all relate to, whether that is the fear of holding yourself back or the rage filled inside your mind because the society in itself is not fair, and you have to do everything it takes to build a better and successful life for yourself.

This shines through many songs; in particular, the ending track ‘Today’s Gonna Be Our Day‘ portrays this inspirational statement. With empowering beats, shreddy melodies, and hard-hitting vocals, the pair sing with charisma and vexation about keeping on fighting for everything in your life and to never give up on something you want badly. The music sequence feels like something you could hear from the likes of Thin Lizzy on ‘The Boys are Back in Town‘, a tune which is filled with positivity yet chaos. “So keep on fighting/Keep on marching/Keep sticking it to you/’Cause what happens when I’m forty-two?/I’m concerned, and that’s the truth, so.”

Altogether, the band bring that fire and chaotic energy that aren’t going to sit by and let good things come to them, they go out and get it. You can see it through their stage performance and how they sing and move to their music. This clearly shows that they have become one of Britpop’s most successful bands in this generation, forcing the music industry to make some space for them, as they are tearing down the walls and gaining the attention of listeners.

Not only does the album provide thrilling sounds bleeding through your eardrums that compel you to dance and rock out to their magnificent music, but The Molotovs also slow down the tempo on some tracks, which creates more sentiment on the album. Songs like ‘Wasted On Youth‘ and ‘Nothing Keeps Her Away‘ slow down on the acoustics, but still contain that special youthful spirit that flows throughout the track. They deliver optimistic words in their tracks, where you can relate to the music and shape it in your life. “She’s read every review/And every article/Acoustic live sets and bootleg demos/But nothing is keeping her away.”

It is motivating to see a young trio who are built up with musical talent and drive, making their own way through this world, and it helps with the appearance of grassroots music venues across London, such as Off The Cuff or The Amersham Arms, which host special music nights allowing young talent to fill the stage and reveal their impactful musical work. Unfortunately, many grassroots venues are closing due to not making enough profit, resulting in thirty live music venues closing in 2025. Without these inclusive music venues that help shine the spotlight on young independent musicians like The Molotovs, it becomes increasingly difficult for indie music to be heard, and this is why it is vital to help grassroots music venues like these stay open.
